SCRANTON -- One University of Scranton student is recovering after being hit in a drive-by shooting early Saturday morning.

Scranton police are investigating a shooting after someone in a Jeep fired shots at an off-campus house on Linden Street and hit one student in the leg.

"I thought this only happened in movies," said one student who was at the apartment when it all happened. He, along with several others, declined to be identified for their own safety. "In my wildest dreams, I never would've imagined my Friday night would have ended with getting shot at."

Witnesses tell Newswatch 16 that a scuffle earlier in the evening with people who stopped by this house escalated very quickly, ultimately with a rock being thrown through a window and shots being fired at from a passing Jeep.

Out of the several people standing outside the apartment, only one student was hit by a bullet. Roommates tell Newswatch16 the student has since been released from the hospital and is doing okay.

A community advisory was sent out to those in the area from representatives of the University of Scranton. Because it is an ongoing investigation, representative with the school declined to comment further.

"Everyone is shaken up by it," added one student. "Our parents are shaken up and it's just a shame that it had to happen like this."

The students who lived at this apartment plan on moving out and staying away from this area for awhile.

For people who have lived in the neighborhood for years, this is out of the ordinary and definitely something that makes them think twice about what and who is around the neighborhood.

"This is a good neighborhood," said Bhagavati Patel. "I've lived 28 years here and nobody bothered me."

A surprising situation for many especially the college students who were there.

"The lesson is if someone starts with you: just walk away," said one student. "Be the bigger man."

Scranton police say they're still investigating and officers are looking for someone a silver Jeep Liberty with a black hood.
