NANTICOKE -- Police in Nanticoke want to find the thieves who stole dozens of laptop computers from Greater Nanticoke Area High School.

The burglary happened late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

District officials are not sure they'll be able to replace the stolen computers before school begins.

Nanticoke police think someone broke into two classrooms by using a knife to pry open windows, but whoever stole the computers also left a trail of evidence including pieces of clothing, copper pliers, and a 7-inch kitchen knife that may have been used to pry open windows.

Authorities believe thieves ripped their clothing while breaking into two classrooms to steal about 60 laptop computers.

"We were very disappointed," said Greater Nanticoke Area Superintendent Ronald Grevera. "We were disgusted that someone would come into the school and take educational equipment."

The district superintendent thinks the crook or crooks may be familiar with the high school because the two classrooms that were broken into each held a black cart with 30 laptops locked inside. A desktop computer was also taken bringing the total to 61 computers worth more than $30,000.

But this was far from the perfect crime.

"They didn't take the chargers, so the computers are pretty much useless," said Grevera.

Parents are shocked someone would essentially steal from students.

"That takes away from all my kids," said Carl Zawadski.

Workers with the school district have since replaced the windows, although there are still some shattered pieces of glass on the ground.

School leaders are hopeful that police will catch whoever broke into the high school.

"They have a substantial amount of DNA evidence. They have a lot of leads and I'm very confident that our police department will find the people that did this," Grevera added.

Authorities are also reviewing the high school's security cameras.Anyone with information is asked to call
