NANTICOKE --  Most people, about 96%, paid their refuse fee in Nanticoke in 2015. That's up three percentage points from the year before.

But not paying your trash fee could land you in front of a magistrate and even end up serving time.

"We have repeat offenders that year after year after year, those are the ones that we really want to go after," said Patricia Zedarski, who has been collecting trash fees for Nanticoke for two decades.

She said homeowners who don't pay the refuse fee could land themselves in front of a magistrate, but if they don't show up, they could be thrown in jail for not paying court costs and fees.

"The ones that we're really trying to get now are the ones that are repeat delinquent offenders," she said.

Right now, Nanticoke is missing about $86,000 in trash fees. Those who do pay their share agree the city should try to get the money that's owed.

"That's a nice piece of change and Nanticoke can certainly use it," said Mike Gable of Nanticoke.

"Yeah, everybody should pay their garbage sticker," said James Pope.

Nanticoke city leaders say it's just a small number of people, about 300, who don't pay the trash fee. If you don't have the money, the magistrate will work with you.

"The judge will give them an option to make payments, so they can come in and still do that," Zedarski said.
