DUNMORE -- Fruits, veggies, and arts and crafts will all be for sale this weekend at a new farmers market in Lackawanna County.

Dunmore will have its own farmers market on Saturdays this summer.

Some people think that an empty lot on one of the busiest streets in the borough of Dunmore has a lot of potential.

For Jena Romanini, it's potential to grow her business, Savvy Home, about a block away.

"There are people in Dunmore that still don't know that I'm here, so it's huge that I will be there," said Romanini.  "Some of the other craft shows that I've done during the year, like say Scranton Cultural Center, that has brought me a lot of customers."

The empty lot on Drinker Street will be the home of the first Dunmore farmers market beginning Saturday. Organizers say the market will feature fresh produce, but also products from businesses just within walking distance that don't see as many customers these days.

La Cucina restaurant will sell its homemade dressing.

"It's a good way to promote our dressing and help Dunmore Corners, help Dunmore out. It used to be a real busy corners but the past ten years it's just kind of like, dying off," said Paolo Lepri of La Cucina.

The organizers expect the farmers market to expand beyond the empty lot. Some of the other shops on Dunmore Corners plan to put out their own tables. Other businesses expect to see an increase in foot traffic.

Farmers markets aren't exactly a good fit for John Gregory and his vacuum business, but he thinks the market will help his declining weekend business.

"In the advent of online shopping and people just not leaving their house to do things, it's gotten quite quiet on Saturdays, which used to be our busiest day of the week," said Gregory.

Business owners hope this lot will be busy again, starting Saturday at 9 a.m. The farmers market goes until 1 p.m.
