COOLBAUGH TOWNSHIP -- One person is dead after a crash in the Poconos.

Police say a car crossed the center lane and struck another vehicle around 7:45 p.m. Monday on Route 196 in Coolbaugh Township near Mount Pocono.

The coroner tells us the driver of the car that was struck, James Miles, 21, of Tobyhanna died at the hospital.

Police said the car that crossed the line was driven by a 17-year-old female. She was taken to a hospital.

The road was closed for hours while officers investigated.

Flowers and candles sit at the site of a deadly crash in Coolbaugh Township near Tobyhanna.

A stretch of Route 196 was closed Monday night for several hours.

James Miles, 21, from Tobyhanna died and another 17-year-old girl was taken to the hospital.

"I saw the road closed and everyone had to turn off. I also saw the police down there," said David Chwal, Tobyhanna.

According to police, the teen girl was driving a Volkswagen Jetta south on Route 196 and ended up in the northbound lane when she hit Miles' Honda Civic.

How she got into the lane is still under investigation.

Richard Fletcher owns an auto shop nearby and saw the aftermath of the deadly crash.

"The one car was up on its roof right there by the intersection at the entrance of the gas station. The two drivers doors were smashed in like a foot and a half and it was up on its roof," said Richard Fletcher, Pocono Performance Auto Body.

The force of the crash caused debris to go everywhere. It even knocked out a fire hydrant and sent it flying. Some people we spoke to tell us crashes happen in this area often but this one was by far the worst.

"It's constant. Two or three accidents a week happen here. One kid got hit on a motorcycle last September and he was seriously hurt," said Fletcher.

According to Miles' Facebook, he was a student at Kutztown University.

Dozens of rest in peace messages have been filing his page.

"I hope, my prayers go out to those impacted and I hope their families are okay," said Chwal.

Authorities have not released the condition of the teenage driver nor if any charges will be filed.

The crash remains under investigation.
