GILBERT -- In the words of one African proverb, "it takes a village to raise a child."

A group of bikers has its own way of supporting young people in its community, awarding a graduating senior a scholarship to help with college costs.

Alondra Maldonado is a 2016  graduate of East Stroudsburg High School. She plans on majoring in pre-med at Lehigh University in the fall.

On Sunday, she received this year's $2,000 scholarship award from the Latin American Motorcycle Association Poconos Chapter in Gilbert also known as LAMA.

Alondra wrote an essay on how she would help give back to the community after graduating college.

In her essay, she talked about how she wants to make safe areas where children in the community can go play and release stress.

Maldonado, excited about receiving the award, says with the ever-growing college costs, the scholarship helps.

"For books," says Alondra Maldonado, "Anything really helps because college is really expensive."

Most of the LAMA Poconos Scholarship Fund for 2016 was from the American Legion Post 927 and the Sons of the American Legion.

President Danny Alicea of the LAMA Poconos says they had many events to raise money this award. Alicea says this yearly award completes the vision of the chapter by giving back to the community.

"We are proud and humbled by even being able to help a youth move a little closer to their goals," said Alicea.
