HAZLETON — A police officer from New Jersey is locked up in Luzerne County after allegedly driving under the influence and crashing into multiple vehicles in Hazleton.

Several people called police saying an erratic driver was hitting parked vehicles throughout the city. Police said two of the vehicles hit were being driven at the time.

Officers stopped the silver Nissan Armada in the area of 15th and Locust Streets. The SUV had heavy front-end damage and the airbags were deployed.

The driver, William F. McCarthy III, 45, of Great Meadows, New Jersey, was arrested and charged with DUI, resisting arrest, and reckless driving, and other charges.

McCarthy is an officer with the Washington Township police department in Morris County, New Jersey.
