COVINGTON TOWNSHIP -- If you're looking for a sandy beach and a new place to swim, you will soon be able to do that in Covington Park in Lackawanna County.

County employees are putting the finishing touches on what will soon be a new swim area at Desandis Pond near Moscow.

Bill Davis, the county's deputy director of parks and recreation, says there will be buoys and lifeguards to make sure everyone stays safe.

"The flat area there, the sand area that's what it's going to look like. It's going to be more groomed. We're just roughing in the area right now. It will be groomed and there will be a nice gentle slope going into the water," Davis said.

County officials say the new swim area will come at a low cost.

They are doing most of the work and already had money budgeted. What they will pay for are materials like the sand and lifeguards.

Barbara Fendeis takes her grandkids and kids to Covington Park as much as possible.

"When the summer hits and the state parks with all the out of state people and stuff you can't get into the lake with the kids. I have six of them that I bring," Findeis said.

"It's a nice local place around here. A bunch of us can come, we can play soccer around here. We can go swimming. There's basketball courts. It's great," Chase Notari said.

We found Notari and his friends playing soccer at Covington Park. They can't wait until the new swimming area opens so they have a place to cool off.

"I love the idea. I think it's a great idea to cool off there after a long soccer scrimmage or basketball game. I think it's going to be great to have a pool here," Chris Wendt said.

If all goes well, weather permitting the swim area could open by the end of next week.

County officials say it will be open through August.
