SOUTH CENTRE TOWNSHIP -- Dozens of residents and environmental officials gathered at a public input hearing as the cleanup continues at the old Safety Light Corporation property.

For years, Safety Light Corporation made things that lit up, from those old glow in the dark watches, to the dials on the cockpit of the airplanes, and even exit signs.

The plant closed back in 2007, and the EPA has been cleaning up the radioactive and hazardous materials that were dumped and seeped into the ground.

"Whenever we can clean up a property to some point where it can be used sometime in the future, that's what we like to try to do," said John Banks, EPA Remedial Project Manager. The site is part of Superfund, a federal program that cleans up hazardous and abandoned waste sites.

"Don't matter how long it takes as long as it's being done properly," added John Pelley, who lives right near the property.

The buildings have come down, and crews are continuing to clean up ground water. EPA officials say the soil is currently being treated or replaced.
