WILLIAMSPORT -- An effort is underway in Lycoming County to keep used car seats out of vehicles.

The group "Safe Kids" teamed up with the coroner's office to collect old car seats Wednesday at Burger King on Maynard Street in Williamsport.

Organizers tell us used car seats purchased at garage sales or second-hand stores can be unsafe.

That's why more than a dozen that were handed in Wednesday will be destroyed.

"The problem with throwing them in the trash is that somebody there is a potential that somebody will reclaim those and use them again and we have actually been at safety seat checks where the seats that people have brought in had been one they picked up curbside,” said Chris Smith from Safe Kids.

Safe Kids says once a car seat has been in a crash, is expired or broken then it needs to be replaced.
