POTTSVILLE -- More than a dozen people are scrambling to find places to live after being forced from their apartments in Pottsville.

As her toddler napped in the car, Katie Serrano stood outside her apartment on Fairview Street, thinking about where they will live now. They were forced from their apartment because city officials determined it is "imminent danger."

"I'm aggravated and frustrated and upset because I have a two-year-old son that now we're out on the street after multiple times we told them to fix it and now, codes kicking us out,” she said.

City officials say they've had ongoing issues and the building owner is out of time. For two months now, there’s been a tarp over the roof, which has been leaking and with electricity hooked up inside, a city codes officer says "someone could be electrocuted."

"It's pretty scary actually the fact that we don't know what's happening. We don't know where we're going to go. We're trying to go to churches and friends and family and things of that nature, but we really don't know what to do at this point,” said tenant Raymond Zweizig.

Building owner Mark Ameer told Newswatch 16 he plans to continue replacing the roof. In the meantime, his attorney is hoping to work with city officials to fix things and get the tenants taken care of.

"I like Mark. He's a good landlord, but at the end of the day, this is a major problem and I also have other problems in my apartment and it should have been fixed immediately,” said Serrano.

Serrano added that she paid rent on June 1 and doesn’t have enough money to pay to stay somewhere else.
