SCRANTON -- With candles lighting the night and balloons to release people's hopes and tears, friends and family gathered at Nay Aug Park to remember Kayla VanWert.

The 18-year-old mother was killed last Sunday on Mckenna Court in Scranton, allegedly by 16-year-old Cathleen Boyer.

According to court papers, the two were fighting on Facebook over VanWert's boyfriend and met up in an alley to fight. VanWert was stabbed at least twice.

Boyer was arraigned on Thursday and faces murder charges.

According to Scranton police, this is the fourth homicide involving juveniles in just the past three years.

"Our generation needs to move on from fights," said Eric Paranich, one of the organizers. "We want to stop domestic violence. We want to stop any kind of violence because the result. This is where it gets us."

"Social media is making the fighting, the crime, and everything worse," added Tiara Sanchez.

Those at the vigil wore red, Kayla's favorite color. There were balloons, candles, and even keychains all to help raise money for a newly created trust fund for Kayla's one-year-old daughter Naomi.

"It's a nice thing that everyone is coming out to support because it's not just about Kayla, it's about her daughter too," Sanchez added.
