MIFFLINBURG -- Employers are looking to hire people for the summer, and many are focusing on teenagers.

Jordan Musser of Mifflinburg is a sophomore at Lock Haven University. She's worked at Weis Markets for two years.

"I'm happy to be back. I need a lot of money for school and stuff, so I can buy my books and tuition," Musser said.

Weis Markets hires people starting at age 16.

"At the age of 16 we have associates that can run registers, stock shelves, pretty much anything other than working with equipment, the knives, things like that," said Weis Markets District Manager Mike Umstead.

Other places always looking to hire high school and college-aged kids are local swimming pools.

The Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority runs the Lewisburg Community Pool. In the wintertime, less than 20 people work for the authority. In the summer, that number rises to 65.

"High school and college kids make up the majority of our pool staff, so all our lifeguards, front desk, all our pool managers are all students who are in college," said Stacey Sommerfield of the Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority.

The Lewisburg Community Pool is looking for lifeguards.

Sarah Ayers, 15, of Lewisburg is on her second day on the job.

"It's really exciting. It's a good first job to have. I'm around kids a lot and I've always loved kids, and it's fun," Ayers said.

Jack Schroeder of Lewisburg says it's been easy for his friends to find summer jobs because of Knoebels Amusement Resort being so close and other businesses opening recently.

"Chipotle just opened up. Chipotle is where a lot of my friends are going, but also Giant and other food places," Schroeder said.

Store managers advise you to apply directly to the place you want to work, and some places have online applications.
