MAHONING TOWNSHIP -- This week marks the last week of classes in many school districts in our area. While a lot of students are celebrating the end of the school year, some students spent the day picking up trash near Danville.
The high school students aren't throwing away their last few days of school. Instead, they are picking up trash.
"I think this is a lot of fun personally. It's one of my favorite projects that we do."
The students are members of the Planet Club at Danville High School.
"We are involved in recycling throughout the high school on a regular basis and then we do adopt a highway twice a year here on Route 11," said club advisor Michael Mast.
This day is one of those days. The students picked up trash along a two-mile stretch of the road near Danville.
The last day of classes for seniors in the Danville Area School District was Thursday and there were even some seniors on hand picking up trash.
Dylan Haas is one of those graduating seniors.
"We don't get any extra credit. All our grades are finished already. We're just here because we care," said Haas.
"All of them are doing things just out of service and that's their mindset," Mast added. "Nobody's getting any kind of accolades for what they're doing. They're just out here because they want to help their community and it's really cool to watch."
"I really like how we get to recycle and really see how it all goes together and what's not recyclable because there's a lot that's really not recyclable," said junior Megan Lynn.
The Planet Club at Danville High School has been around for about 15 years. About 30 students took part in this cleanup.
