MUNCY -- A 98-year-old World War II veteran from Lycoming County helped lead the Memorial Day parade in Muncy on Memorial Day.

Wait on the sidewalk long enough on Memorial Day morning in Muncy and you’ll hear the sirens, see an old friend, and maybe get the chance to honor a veteran.

"I honor all veterans on this glorious day from World War II all around the history wars of America," said Rick Zerby.

98-year-old Charlie Libby had a different view than most this year. He sat in the back of a Mustang. Libby is an honored guest and for good reason. He served in Europe during World War II. Libby, who loves to dance, doesn't mind talking about his time in the Army during WWII, but some memories are harder to share than others.

"A piece of shrapnel went through the back of him. I lost him. He was one of my best friends," said Libby.

“The price of our freedom was paid for in blood and it still takes blood to pay for it," said Ron Dudley.

While many families waited by the side of the street to see the parade come through, many others stayed at the cemetery in Muncy. It's a somber reminder of what this day is really about.

"This is about something more than just picnicking and getting with friends and family,” said Donna Campbell from Loyalsock Township.

For Donna Campbell, Memorial Day is also a reminder to thank veterans like Charlie Libby.

"We see him just enough to talk to him and I didn't know his story," said Campbell.

Charlie Libby's story is worth sharing, especially on Memorial Day.
