LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- Some drivers hoping to get a jump on travel this Memorial Day weekend were caught in back-ups Friday on Interstate 81 in Lackawanna County.

Near the Scott exit, the highway is down to one lane. There are no workers there, but its part of an ongoing project.

"A little hot and sweaty and slow. Slow. We've been on the road since 2, and we haven't made it very far. It feels like there's more people on the road,” said Rachel Crane of New Jersey.

With many more drivers on the road for the holiday weekend, the one lane was frustrating for many.

Bill Pierce was driving from Orlando, Florida to New York State and says traffic has been heavy.

"Heavy, very heavy, been a lot of construction especially here in Pennsylvania,” he laughed.

Several crashes on the interstate in Lackawanna County also snarled traffic during the day Friday.

Some travelers say they have such exciting holiday plans, they didn't mind the delays, as long as they safely get where they're going.

"We're going up to New York to go to a reunion of my high school band, 50th reunion. There's going to be 646 people marching in a reunion band. 50 years. It is incredible. It's going to be neat,” said Carol Marble of Chester County.

For many, traveling this weekend each year is a tradition.

"We always do a family reunion on Memorial Day, and we're going up to Buffalo,” said Mike Crane of New Jersey.

On such a hot and humid day, drivers say they can deal with delays as long as the air-conditioning is working.

"We had sheer terror when I accidentally turned off the AC. We thought it had broken down,” laughed John Marble of Chester County.
