WEST HAZLETON -- The sudden change in weather along with the Memorial Day weekend appear to be reasons home improvement stores were extra busy Friday.

Customers were buying everything from flowers to air conditioners.

Store managers tell us, Memorial Day weekend is always busy, but this heat wave hitting as well has even more customers packing in.

Stores like the Lowe’s in West Hazleton are prepared for convenience, piling dozens of air conditioner units at the front of their stores.

"This is kind of like our Christmas," said Jason King, Lowe's store manager. “It's Memorial weekend. People are getting ready for parties. They are getting ready for the heat."

Although many are trying to beat the heat, no one seemed to be complaining about it.

"The weather broke and everybody just wants to get out there and start their planting," said Kathy Falatko of Freeland.

With less than a month left of spring, some like Falko are welcoming the heat. She came to flower shop so she can plant this Memorial Day weekend.

She was excited to pick up lilies and a hanging basket.

People picking flowers say the busy business is a theme at many garden shops and home improvement stores.

"I was at places all down in Sugarloaf, too. They are all opened up today. It was all crowded. Everybody was looking for their flowers, looking for flags for the cemetery," said Renee Phile of Sugarloaf.
