KELLY TOWNSHIP -- As Memorial Day approaches, some people in Union County observed the holiday a few days early. McCann school of business and technology held an event honoring our veterans.

While this may have looked like a giant picnic in front of McCann School of Business and Technology near Lewisburg, it was actually a somber event observing Memorial Day. Several of the students and teachers are veterans, so the school wanted to do something special.

"It would be an opportunity for those students who have had family members and relatives and friends who lost their lives to memorialize them," Fred Crum said.

Veterans carried flags and there was a moment of silence to remember those who gave their lives for our country.  Windows were filled with pictures and names of loved ones who lost their lives. People donated $1 to sign the window.

Susan Colon is an instructor at McCann.

"I put in memory of my father, Donald Homes Wagner Sr. From me and my children, Mario and Marcus. We just really miss him. We love him and we're really proud that he was in the airborne," Colon said.

The school presented a check for $200 to a representative from the Wounded Warrior Project.

"It's a wonderful thing. They'll take it and put it towards different programs that they have," SSG Michael Bennett (Ret) said.

The eye-catching American flag is 20 by 30 feet. It was loaned to McCann by the Moose Lodge in Milton.

One person who admired that flag was Mark Oberdorf. The McCann student served three tours in Iraq and knew several people who died in combat. Memorial Day has a special meaning to him.

"Memorial Day for me isn't about the sales and getting thank yous, which it shouldn't be at all. I think it's remembering all those who served and died for this great country of ours," Oberdorf said.
