WILLIAMSPORT -- Several police departments in Lycoming County looking to hire are now teaming up to find the best candidates.

Most people have to fill out more than one job application in their lifetimes and some of them can be pretty long. Police departments in Lycoming County are having a tough time getting candidates to apply at all, so they've decided to make easier for everyone.

Long before a new officer like William Badger can get behind the wheel of a police cruiser, police in Williamsport have to make sure they're right for the job.

"Yeah, it definitely gets easier as you go," said Officer William Badger.

Williamsport Bureau of Police is hiring, which means applicants will have to fill out paperwork.

"The application process is rather extensive, and we are trying to learn as much about the applicant as we can,” said Captain Jody Miller.

The application to apply is a little thicker because when you fill it out, you are not just applying for the Williamsport Police Department, you are also applying to police departments in South Williamsport and every other police department in Lycoming County besides Penn College.

"Typically, again when departments applied before they had to come to each department, pick up an application, fill out an application, take a test," said Chief Robert Hetner.

South Williamsport Police Chief Robert Hetner had fewer than a dozen applicants the last time he was looking to hire.

"Police officers are being challenged and being questioned with everything they do and many people are not interested in applying for a position that they are going to be under that kind of scrutiny, but it is what it is," said Chief Hetner.

"The hope is that advertising one day, one fee, you have the opportunity to apply to 10 departments. Hopefully, that will encourage people to apply further," said Captain Miller.

"I applied at three different departments here in Lycoming County, so if I could have used one application to apply for all of those it would have made it a lot easier," said Officer William Badger.

The day of the test is July 9th.

Police departments are encouraging people to apply early.
