SCRANTON -- A parade to honor men and women in uniform took place in the Electric City.

Spectators filled the streets of downtown Scranton for the annual Armed Forces Parade Saturday, saluting those who served our country.

The parade started at the Gino Merli Veterans Center on Penn Avenue. Residents who live there like Merlin Phillips were able to watch.

"It's nice to know that people honor what you may have done in the past," Phillips said.

Phillips watched the parade go by with several others from the veterans’ center. Everyone was eager to see all the military units, high school bands, and others go by.

Michael Rametta of South Abington Township is a Korean War veteran. He likes watching the bands go by.

"It's very good. Yes, I’ve been coming every year," Rametta said.

People who came out to line the streets of Scranton to watch the parade said it's so nice to see all the organizations and bands come out to support the veterans and they hope to see this parade grow every year.

One family from Catawissa came to watch their relative march with the Navy Sea Cadets.

"This is the first time I’ve been here and it's amazing. There are a lot of people here, and I think I’m going to enjoy it," John Dewald of Catawissa said.

Eileen Masters from Scranton watched. Her son served as a Marine. She thinks honoring all past, present, and future veterans is important.

"Everything is for them and I wish there were more people to see them coming down because they need our support," she said.

Whether they were walking in the parade or looking on, veterans gave a big thanks to those who came out to enjoy the sight and sounds of the parade.

The parade marked the end of Armed Forces Week here in our area as well as across the country.
