FRANCES SLOCUM STATE PARK -- Usually when you see a bus full of seniors they're being dropped off for maybe a doctor's appointment, but the seniors who arrived to Frances Slocum State Park in Luzerne County Thursday came to see Mother Nature.

"Oh, I love the sun, and as long as it's out, I'm enjoying my day," said one woman.

About six dozen seniors from United Methodist Homes near Pittston and Tunkhannock got some sun, played games, and went fishing.

"I love it! It's a nice, clean park and the state takes good care of it," said Don Collins of Jenkins Township.

He was one of several men fishing along a dock, but it was Mildred Umla who caught the first fish of the day.

"It's a thrill to be able to catch the fish, even if it is a little one," said Umla.

As for John Zoranski, he prefers hanging with more grounded creatures, like ducks resting in the shade of his lawn chair.

Meanwhile, many of the other women were watching from afar, blowing bubbles and playing games. The crew of women all made hats together for the outing.

"Actually it was for a little party that we were having, so we made hats and fancied them up, just for something to do," said Beverly Mack of Jenkins Township.

Given the rainy weather over the last couple weeks, they couldn't have picked a better day to make their first trip of the season.
