PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP -- People who use the trails around Moon Lake Park in Luzerne County to go biking are used to experiencing the serene beauty that nature has to offer, but a logging operation around part of the area has trees and branches toppled over many bike trails. It's a concern for members of Anthracite Mountain Pedalers, who ride the trails weekly.

“I just thought about all the time away from biking we're going to have now,” said David Temarantz.

“It's definitely disappointing. The trails are pretty much covered in downed trees and tree tops,” added Chris Murphy.

Theta Land Corporation originally received the rights to cut timber in the area years ago. Luzerne County Councilman Rick Williams says Theta has since sold the rights to Deer Park Lumber near Tunkhannock.

“We hope Deer Park Lumber would be good stewards of the property and be respectable of it, but it's not something we can legally insist they perform,” he said.

The bike trails at Moon Lake Park were created by volunteers. Now many only hope Deer Park Lumber picks up their mess.

“It's going to take still a month or more to clean it up, I believe,” Temarantz said.

Newswatch 16 reached out to officials at Deer Park Lumber to ask if they would clean up what has been left behind. We're still waiting for a response.

Officials from Anthracite Mountain Pedalers are expecting they'll have to do the picking up. They're now looking for volunteers to help after the logging is finished in a couple weeks.
