SAYRE -- More than 60 area students, locals and even the DCNR Secretary kicked off a three-day kayaking trip along the Susquehanna River in Bradford County.
It's all to celebrate a state grant awarded to the North Branch of the Susquehanna.
"This is based on voting so this is a democratic process," said Cindy Adams Dunn, DCNR Secretary. "Citizens of the North Branch voted early and got their friends to vote and got the river of the year designation."
The grant that will help fund more trips like these that help get area students, along with other groups, out and about enjoying the sights of one of Pennsylvania's longest rivers.
"I've lived pretty close to my whole life, but I've never really known much about it," said Jarod Boardman, a senior at Towanda Area Junior/Senior High School. "I think getting to know it and seeing what's going on around it will be pretty cool to find out."
James Twigg knows the river well; he canoed the entire thing from Cooperstown, New York all the way to Maryland when he was just 16 years old.
"It was an absolute amazing experience when people would come out and be there for you and help you and do things that would accommodate for a pleasant trip and a pleasant experience and this is what we have here," said Twigg.
The river trip wraps up on Sunday near Wyalusing.
