KEYSTONE COLLEGE -- High schoolers from Wyoming and Lackawanna Counties spent the day outside the classroom competing against each other in the annual "Envirothon."

It's a statewide competition where students test their knowledge about everything from aquatics to wildlife.

"We answer lots of questions about ecology," said Kasidy Leggin of Valley View High School. "There's identifying animals, listening to bird calls, and identifying those plus foresting and soils."

Alaina Jones of Lackawanna Trail High School is her team's soil specialist.

"We have an aquatics specialist, wildlife, current issues, and forestry, so we all specialize in one category and hope we work together as a team," she added.

For students we spoke with, taking part in this "Envirothon" is a chance to get out of the classroom and dealing with the real thing.

"It's a lot more interactive," Leggin added.

"It really gets them out of the school, into the environment, and they're also able to interact with a lot of the professional people already in the environmental field, so they're able to ask them questions and see if it's something they want to turn into a career," said Jerry Stiles of the Lackawanna County Conservation District.

Once the scores were tallied, students from Lakeland Junior/Senior High School will represent Lackawanna County in the statewide competition along with Lackawanna Trail High School as a representative from Wyoming County.

The statewide competition starts on May 24 at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove.
