WAYMART -- Students from R.D. Wilson Elementary School in Waymart got a break from the classroom Tuesday. It was only to become workers at their very own recycling center.

In an assembly-style line, pre-K through fifth grade students had to figure out what can be recycled and they had to do it fast.

"It teaches you what kind, what plastics and what things you can recycle," student Jamal Benedict said.

A student recycle center is just one way Waste Management teaches kids the do's and don'ts of recycling.

The company is responsible for taking the trash and recyclables from the school every week.

"If you wouldn't recycle there would be like you wouldn't know what to do with it and you might leave it on the ground or floor," student Beja Marcel said.

John Hambrose who works for Waste Management says it's important to teach kids about recycling, no matter the age.

"Kids get it. They're great recyclers and they want to do the right thing for the earth. They take the message home and they make their parents and their siblings better recyclers," Hambrose said.

Students say they learned a lot about recycling at the event. The most important thing they learned is what they can and cannot recycle.

"Do you recycle plastic cups?" one student asked.

One of the most asked questions was if you can recycle iPads.

"I didn't know that you could recycle iPads and electronics that really surprised me. I learned a lot of other things too," student Ella Pavlovich said.

Students were quick to pick up what you can recycle and what you cannot.

"You can't recycle tires or footballs or soccer balls or basketballs. You don't always recycle rubber," student Makayla Moser said.

Waste Management hopes to continue bringing these hands-on experiences to schools throughout the area.
