DURYEA -- Crews working on the Duryea Flood Control Project along the Lackawanna River will be the first to tell you there's no sure way to tackle the wrath of Mother Nature.

But the state DEP is building a new levee wall to try to prevent flooding like what happened in 2011.

"A majority of the flooding that happened in Duryea, a lot of the damage came from water going through this gap in the two levees for Duryea," said Jonathan Conville of the DEP.

The new wall closes much of that gap. The flood wall consists of 1,000 feet of steel sheet pile up to seven feet high.

Pat Murlan's home is just off the bank of the Lackawanna River, but the lifelong resident of Duryea is here to stay, no matter how high the water gets.

"Because it's home, it's been home and I think people feel that that's where they want to be," she said.

The project should be finished by the start of summer.
