SCRANTON -- Nearly every commander of the USS Scranton gathered in the Electric City to honor the 25th anniversary of the submarine.

"I think it's very unusual, perhaps unprecedented," said former Commander Earl Carter.

The submarine was first commissioned in 1991.

"It was such an excitement and we were so proud to know that the submarine was going to go all over the world and carry our name," said former mayor Jimmy Connors.

Jerry Weinberger of Scranton and Ray Angeli of Eynon collected signatures from the commanders for memorabilia.

"It was a huge event," said Angeli of the commissioning in 1991. "It was an enormous thing that was going on and it really spoke well of the city of Scranton."

"We share a common bond because we commanded one of the greatest warships I think that's ever sailed the seas," added Carter.

Commander Carter took Newswatch16's Mike Stevens on a tour of the submarine in 2000.

The USS Scranton has been a part of plenty of naval missions around the world, including Libya in 2011. You can learn more about the sub at an exhibit at the Scranton Library running now through May 15.

The submarine is being overhauled right now in Maine before it docks in San Diego later this year.
