SHAMOKIN TOWNSHIP -- Fire companies are often helping people who lost their homes in a fire, but one fundraiser in Northumberland County hit extra close to home for one department.

"One day I came from school and found out from my mom that my dad's house caught on fire. But the good news was no one was there and got hurt. I kept thinking one day prior that I stayed there - I could have been a part of it."

Nine-year-old Abby Judy of Shamokin wrote that letter after sparks flew from the cord of an old lamp, setting a chair on fire and then her home nearly three weeks ago.

Abby, along with others in the community, were inside the Stonington Volunteer Fire Company near Shamokin for a spaghetti benefit.

"It was heartbreaking," said Abby Judy.

"It's an unimaginable thought," said Jasen Judy, Abby's father. "I just didn't believe it at first."

Capt. Jasen Judy has volunteered with the Stonington Volunteer Fire Company for 16 years.

"It means the world to me that I'd have the backing of the community and the support of my firefighter family," he added.

"It's kind of special because you know you're helping somebody that's basically your neighbor," said Assistant Chief Mark Kramer. "You're side by side with them at the scene of an incident and it's a friend."

Now, Captain Jasen Judy and his family are moving forward and looking to start fresh in a new home.
