Lake-Lehman distance runner Dominic Hockenbury is looking for his 5th high-school gold medal at the state meet in May. Hockenbury who is set to join the cross country National Champions at Syracuse University in July already has two PIAA state cross country golds and two more in the 3200.
"We'll I definitely have some goals I have set out forth especially in the 2 mile, and coming up I just want to knock those goals off the list and come into my college career on a good note," said Dominic.
"He is a once in a lifetime kid if he closes the deal it's going to be five state golds. I'm not too sure how many other Pennsylvania athletes have five individual state golds. I'm definitely taking it all in and trying to enjoy every moment of having this kid on our team," said John Sobocinski-Lake-Lehman head coach.
The two-mile is Dom's specialty, but he is running more mile races this year than ever before, and recently broke the school record by running a 4:15.
"How do you feel right now? Right now I feel great. I've come off a lot of training in the shorter distances running the mile a lot, so I definitely feel my finishing speed has picked up a lot. Hopefully that translates to some good news in the two-mile," again said Dominic.
Several District II AA records still stand for Hockenbury to break. The number in the mile is 4:17.44 seconds and Rico Galassi from Holy Cross set the two-mile mark of 9:15.78 in 2013.
"He is obviously very humble and doesn't really like talking about himself, but certainly he's put in the work and obviously he is getting rewarded for it. Absolutely. He works so hard and he's earned everything he's done is on him. We're just here to guide him along," again said John.
"You must be looking forward to districts and going down to Shippensburg one more time? Definitely like you said going after some records and defending some titles and I can't be anymore excited," added Dominic.
Hockenbury should get a push at states trying to knock off that 9:04:09 state record time.
