WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP -- Woodspring Suites held a ribbon cutting for its new hotel near Wilkes-Barre Wednesday and invited a dozen employees to attend.  More workers are expected to be hired soon.

Developers built it along Bear Creek Boulevard.

While guests can stay there for just one night, what really makes it stand out from other hotels in the area is that they are an "extended stay" hotel.

“What that means is that we target those traveling professionals in the Wilkes-Barre area that are staying more than six nights, maybe six nights to a week or maybe a couple weeks at a time,” said Andre Butler of Woodspring Suites.

Other nearby hotels, including Genetti's in downtown Wilkes-Barre welcome the competition.

“I don't think they'd affect us because we're downtown, and the people who want to stay at the top rated hotel out of 21 in Wilkes-Barre, they'll stay here,” said the owner of Genetti’s.

That might be fighting words to some hotels. To Woodspring Suites, it's a warm welcome to the Wyoming Valley.

"It's a brand new brand. It's a new concept, so that creates excitement, so that's how you stay competitive along with cost containment,” Butler said.

There's been more than 1,000 hotel rooms built right here in Luzerne County over the past five years. The county's convention and visitors bureau points out that hotels have to compete to get guests, often meaning lower rates and deals.
