LEWISBURG -- High school students in Lewisburg spent their free time skateboarding on Wednesday getting ready for an event this weekend at the Lewisburg skate park.

The students are part of a club dedicated to skateboarding. The club was formed in memory of one of their friends.

Lewisburg Area High School's brand new skate club meets weekly on school property.

"We started out with about 20 kids and within a few weeks there were other kids knocking on the door saying, 'Can I join?  Can I join?'  So we've kind of capped it in the mid-20s.  But the excitement's been pretty neat to watch grow," said club advisor Van Wagner.

Wagner is an environmental science teacher at the school and he also advises the skate club.  It brings students together.

"It's a ton of fun.  It's an enjoyable time because all the kids here just love skating. It's fun," said freshman Christian Coleman.

"It's really fun. It's really nice to come outside and skate with some friends instead of just sitting in the classroom," said senior Kim Connell.

Now those students want to bring the community together. They are holding what they call "Skate Fest" this Saturday at the Lewisburg skate park. There will be food, prizes, raffles and, of course, skating.

Wagner says it is to show the community the positive impact of skateboarding.

The skate club was formed in memory of a student who was killed in a car crash last year. That student was very passionate about skateboarding. Miles Foreman was a senior at Lewisburg Area High School and a big fan of skateboarding.

"Every time I'd see him at the skate park, even if I'd be feeling down, he'd make my day a lot greater," said freshman Ethan Daniels.

The Lewisburg skate park is located at the Lewisburg Area Recreation Park just off Saint Mary's Street.

Saturday afternoon's Skate Fest is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
