BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK -- The primary election in Pennsylvania is a week away, and like New York State, we don't usually matter during primary season because we vote so late.

We crossed the state line and made a trip to Binghamton, talking to voters about actually getting some attention for a change.

It was busy right from the start when the primary election polls opened at noon in Binghamton. New York State voters are not used to casting a vote that really matters for president.

"It's nice to know that you put forth all this energy to vote and you actually have a say for somebody," said Binghamton resident Brittany Barrett.

The candidates have been crisscrossing New York for weeks.

Binghamton saw Ted Cruz and Bernie Sanders make stops there, each asking for support in the southern tier.

It's a much different experience for some of these longtime New York voters.

"It's been very interesting to see that we're so important this time around," said Pat Monaco.

In Pennsylvania, we don't usually matter for the primary, but we do get a lot of attention for the general election because we're a swing state. But when you cross into New York, their primary doesn't usually matter and they don't usually matter in November either.

Former New York Senator Hillary Clinton and New Yorker Donald Trump led in the polls coming into this primary.

But the first four voters we talked with each had a different view.

"I am definitely pro-Bernie, absolutely," said Barrett. "I love him and his politics and his policies.

"I cast my vote for Hillary. I think she can get the job done," said Karen Howard.

"Donald Trump, I like what he has to say," said Monaco. "I think he will make a great president because he doesn't owe anyone anything."

"We would like to see either Cruz or Kasich win," said Bob Gavazzi, adding that upstate votes may not matter.

"It's been interesting, but in New York your vote really doesn't matter because of downstate carries the whole state."

The polls in New York State close at 9 p.m.

The polls in Pennsylvania open at 7 a.m. Tuesday, April 26.
