DUNMORE -- Because of a holiday on Friday in Washington D.C., people had a few extra days to file their taxes.

Monday marks the last day and post offices and tax prep businesses are not exactly crammed with last minute filers.

The phones were ringing but not off the hook on the last day to file taxes at H & R Block in Dunmore. Only a few people stopped in to file their taxes.

"I didn't realize until, like, Saturday when I messaged here. I completely forgot about it until then," said Cassandra Leidel.

Monday's deadline helped people like Leidel who came to a tax preparing office for the first time. She was surprised at the lack of people rushing to file.

"I really thought that there would be and that's why I called and made an appointment because I didn't want to be walking in to a room full of people, but there is no one here."

People at Liberty Income Tax tell us a lot of people got their taxes done on April 14 and 15 so the lack of appointments doesn't surprise them.

"It helps," said Joe Mihalka at Liberty Income Tax. "I mean because there are those people who come in on the 15th who have to gather a couple extra things and it gives them the three extra days."

The lack of people rushing into tax offices can also be attributed to more people filing taxes on line.

"Some people are going the online option," Mihalka added.  "I mean some shouldn't and should see professional tax help."

At the post office, no lines. Only a few last minute filers could be found at the office on Blakely Street in Dunmore.

According to the IRS, as of April 8, almost $82 million in refunds has been issued.

Those who filed for an extension have until mid-October to send in their completed returns.
