STROUDSBURG -- It’s almost time for trout fishing in all of Pennsylvania. Opening day for the northern part of the state begins Saturday at 8 a.m.

It looks like opening day should be beautiful for anyone wanting to fish the McMichael’s Creek or any stream, lake or pond in the Poconos.  But you’ll need to make sure you have just a few things before trying to hook a trout or two.

The wait is almost over for anglers in Monroe County.  Trout season opens in less than 24 hours, making the bait and tackle section of Dunkleberger’s in Stroudsburg the place to be!

"People are getting their fishing licenses, getting their trout stamps, getting  ready for bait and their little bit of tackle, just little odds and ends and just to get a little bit of gossip of where the fish are biting,” said fishing specialist Jeff Benkie at Dunkleberger’s.

This group from Long Island is in getting fishing licenses and supplies hoping to have some luck up in Lackawanna State Park in Lackawanna County.

"Reels, spool, bait, that's pretty much it.  Everything else - frying pan if you catch them,” said Paul Draganigos of Long Island.

Others are in getting live bait.

“To fathead minnows to medium size to larger worms to small worms, blood worms, earthworms, wax worms, you name it we have it,” said Benekie.

Anglers can cast a line here in the Brodhead Creek and across Pennsylvania beginning at 8 a.m. Many of these areas have been stocked by the Fish and Boat commission making your chances even greater.

Opening day has become a tradition for some.

“I've enjoyed the opening day of trout for I guess 65 years, something like that,” said William Bonser.

But with ideal weather forecasted for Saturday and Sunday, workers here at Dunkleberger's believe lots of folks will bite at the opportunity to get out and fish.

“What better way to get out and get some sun on your back with a fishing pole in your hand,” said Benkie.

Anyone out fishing should make sure your license is visible for the Fish and Boat Commission.

Dunkleberger's in Stroudsburg opens early Saturday starting at 6 a.m. for any last-minute fishing items you might need.
