LITTLE MEADOWS -- Troopers surrounded a home in Little Meadows for hours on Tuesday evening into Wednesday after a man barricaded himself inside a house and threatened to shoot others.

Charges are coming for 50-year-old David Shears after he allegedly fired his rifle from his porch, and then proceeded to threaten other people he was living with inside the home in Little Meadows.

Officers were in riot gear and bringing out the heavy equipment as the standoff lasted for nearly 12 hours.

Close friends told Newswatch16 David Shears had a psychotic breakdown.

According to investigators, the state police emergency extraction team managed to enter the home with the help of tear gas and remove Shears. No one was hurt.

Sarah Springsteen lives right across from where it all happened and woke up to an officer in riot gear, telling her family to stay inside.

"I've never seen anything like that," she said. "It was unnerving for sure. It seemed surreal. It doesn't feel like it really happened. It felt like a dream."

For some people in Little Meadows, the standoff comes as a surprise. For others, it's yet another sign this area has changed dramatically in just the last 10 to 15 years.

"It's very scary," said Wanda Darrow. "It's not safe to be around here anymore and we have no officers around. They're all the way in Gibson."

Newswatch16 spoke with the homeowner where it happened, and he's just happy no one was hurt.
