WILKES-BARRE -- Five Wilkes-Barre Area teachers accused of drinking alcohol before or during a school dance were fired abruptly at Monday night's school board meeting.
They are Corey Brenner, Mollie Evans, Jason Lukachinsky, Jill Wujcik, and Glenn Zimmerman. They allegedly violated the district's alcohol policy by drinking before and during a school dance earlier this year.
But do students think they should have been fired?
"No!" said one student. "Everybody makes mistakes. There are people who are doing worse. I don't think she should have been fired."
But school leaders point out the firings were also meant to send a message to all teachers in the district.
"We expect professional behavior from our professionals. They are role models for our students, and I think that was a clear message that was sent by this board," the superintendent said.
The teacher's union is expected to appeal the firings.
