SCRANTON -- A construction project is underway in Scranton that will soon be bringing a new playground and dog park to the area.

The North Scranton Little League baseball fields have provided a lot of memories over the years for kids in this part of the city.  There may soon be more fun to be had in an empty space next to the ball fields.

Joe Aldcowski, the treasurer of the organization says by the summertime, the empty spot will become a playground for kids and a dog park.

"We started planning the concept back in about 2002 and just as we were really starting to make some progress on it, actually we had the economic downturn," Aldcowski explained.

Thanks to a $20,000 grant from the county, construction is now getting started on Theodore Street and Return Avenue.

Jack Watkins lives across the street from the ball fields. He isn't thrilled about a dog park, but he welcomes the idea of a playground.

"I've got grandchildren that would like to see a park," said Watkins. "I could bring them out and play. It'd be great for the neighborhood."

Derrick McCloe of Scranton loves the idea of a dog park, especially for his dogs Tiger and Midnight.

"I think it's a great idea. I live right down the street, and I have three dogs at home, so it's a great way for them to get exercise."

North Scranton Little League has secured some money from grants, but now they need the public's help to help raise money for the rest of the project.

There are some sponsors, but in order for the project to be completed, the organization still needs another $30,000 to $40,000.

Fundraising coordinator Rosemary Bohenek hopes people in the area see the need for the playground and dog park.

"In 30 years, we can look back and we were part of something great, making a change, you know, be the change. Don't talk about the change, be the change. Send in a corporate sponsorship. Send in a $100 donation."
