San Antonio, TX — [Update at 12:08 p.m. ET] An airman shot his squadron commander Friday morning at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, a Pentagon official told CNN about reports of a shooting there. The official did not comment on the status of either the airman or the commander.

Two people are dead at the Air Force base, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department has said.

Two people are dead at Texas’ Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland after reports of an active shooter there, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department said Friday morning on Twitter.

The facility — also known as Lackland Air Force Base — is on lockdown, according to its Facebook page.

The Sheriff’s Department reported shortly before 9 a.m. CT that it was responding to a report of an active shooter at the Air Force facility in southwestern San Antonio. It reported the deaths about an hour later.

“We have two dead at Lackland Air Force Base, deputies are still inside the building,” the Sheriff’s Department said on Twitter.

Details about the shooting and whether a shooter still was at large weren’t immediately available.

The shooting was reported at the facility’s Medina Annex, the base’s Facebook page said.

Lackland is where the U.S. Air Force conducts its basic training for enlistees. Lackland is one of three major military facilities — the others being Fort Sam Houston and Randolph Air Force Base — that merged to form Joint Base San Antonio in 2010.
