POCONO TOWNSHIP -- A wind turbine is being installed at Northampton Community College Monroe Campus. The equipment is meant to save the campus some money and be used as a teaching tool as well.

This turbine will soon tower 80 feet high on Northampton Community College’s Monroe Campus near Tannersville.

It’s the latest green addition on the already environmentally friendly campus.

"A wind turbine seemed like a natural addition, especially because if you've been up on this campus. We do have lots of wind,” said Associate Dean of Administrative Services Rachel Frick-Cardelle.

When this turbine is fully installed this month, it will power a small portion of campus.

"It's a 10-kilowatt wind turbine. The average household could have all of their electrical needs taken care of by about a 5 kilowatt,” said Frick-Cardelle.

Students busy working on biology labs in Pocono Hall say they’ve noticed the new addition and are anxious to learn more.

"At first I was wondering what it was because it was just lying in the grass there by itself,” said Kayree Stewart of Tobyhanna.

Once the wind turbine is up and running, students can check out an interactive dashboard to find out how much energy it's producing and how much money it's saving the college.

Professors plan to use the turbine as a teaching tool in math and science curriculum.

Students and staff say it’s a perfect fit for the Poconos.

"I think it's actually really good, just trying to go green I guess,” said Kristen Brea of Saylorsburg.

"That's good it helps the environment, and it helps, it keeps everything clean and in order for the people coming in after me,” said Stewart.

The $125,000 turbine should be installed by Earth Day.  Plans to add more turbines are very possible too.

"It does seem as though there could be space for additions, that's certainly something we'll look at as we go along,” said Frick-Cardelle.
