SCRANTON -- Former President Bill Clinton was in Scranton Thursday night to stump for his wife, Hillary Clinton.

To applause and cheers, Bill Clinton took the stage inside Scranton High School.

He was in town to talk about his wife’s policies and why she’s the best candidate for the presidency.

Pennsylvania’s primary is April 26. Hillary Clinton faces U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont for the Democratic nomination.

“If you want to do something to make America better, you ought to pick the best change-maker with the best ideas, the best preparation, the best job at this time. If that's the test, it's not close. You know her here. You've been good to her here. You've been good to me here,” said Bill Clinton in the Electric City.

Before the speech, hundreds stood in line, waiting for the doors to open at the free event.

“She has the experience. She has the intelligence. She has the kind of demeanor I’d like to see in a person running for president,” said Bernadine DePietro of Peckville about Hillary Clinton.

Among the crowd were some Scranton High School students. Most of them too young to vote in the upcoming primary, but excited to hear what Bill Clinton had to say.

“I’m excited to vote in the general election in November because I’ll be able to vote then,” said Haileigh Finnerty of Scranton.

Hillary Clinton has local ties; her father was a Scranton native.

She spent time in northeastern Pennsylvania as a child and in the past few months, her family has been back for her campaign.

Bill Clinton was here for a private fundraiser in Scranton in December and the Clintons’ daughter, Chelsea, spoke at a private fundraiser in Luzerne County in February.

Former Scranton Mayor Jim Connors is a Clinton supporter.

“If the others ignore Scranton, they’re crazy. When the rest of the country votes, at this level, percentage wise, Scranton votes up here. People take their elections seriously around here,” said Connors.

Former President Clinton talked about his wife’s plans to improve education, healthcare, manufacturing, and more.

"She is the best single change-maker I have ever known. She always makes something good happen."

In 2008, Hillary Clinton won the Democratic primary in Pennsylvania against Barack Obama.
