FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP -- A family in Susquehanna County was the unintended recipient of some air mail this weekend.

A balloon carrying a message for a grandmother who passed away in Ohio traveled hundreds of miles in the wind.

High atop Franklin Hill Road several miles outside Montrose, the wind blows here and there and over the weekend, it delivered something tattered and red with a message attached all the way from Ohio.

Christopher Reinwald's mother brought it inside from the snow and upon further inspection discovered the note from was Zanesville in eastern Ohio.

"We're like, it couldn't have made it all the way. I pulled out my phone and looked at Google Maps. 467 miles away. An 8.5 hour drive. I thought there's no way a balloon made it that far," said Reinwald.

The Reinwalds got right to work trying to find the story behind that balloon and posted photos of the ballon and note on Facebook.

It wasn't long and the family from Ohio contacted them. The balloon was meant for the boy's great-grandmother, Bonnie Jean McPeek, who passed away in December.

"She was going to be 94 on April 2. For the birthday, the kids decided to write messages on a balloon and let them go," added Reinwald.

Debbie Marvin has been delivering mail for years on the back roads of Susquehanna County and thinks it's quite the distance to have one message travel by chance.

"It's interesting. I deliver mail every day. That's one that's not addressed. The Lord made it go there," she said.

"You don't get to find many heart-touching things like this so, we're definitely going to hold onto it like a keepsake," said Reinwald.
