TUNKHANNOCK -- Attention film lovers! If you're looking to binge on some Oscar nominated movies, look no further than Wyoming County.

The Dietrich Theater's spring film festival kicked off Friday night.

This year, the theater is celebrating its 15th anniversary.

If there's any indication just how popular the Dietrich Theater's Annual Spring Film Festival has gotten, check out the long line waiting for the opening night gala to start.

“We're going to see ‘The Lady in the Van’ tonight and I have to get the brochure, have to come back to see several others,” said Earl Lehman from Jessup.

For three weeks, more than 20 movies, including Oscar-nominated ones, will be shown at the theater in Tunkhannock.

New this year, there will be two movies shown at noon and 2 p.m. instead of just one, due to demand.

“People ask for it, that's what they say, I wish I could have seen more films, so we're providing more opportunity,” said Erica Rogler with the Dietrich.

And this year, the Dietrich, which is also the Wyoming County Cultural Center, is celebrating its 15th anniversary.

The grand opening was held back on April 13, 2001, on Tioga Street.

Hildy Morgan is one of the founding members.

“We wanted to have, we wanted the movies to pay for the arts and we hoped to have some classes for kids, a couple little things, you know,” said Morgan. “Just joining a movie theater we had no idea how to do it.”

Apparently, they did pretty good job.

“Ninety thousand people come through our doors for classes, events, exhibits and films,” said Rogler.

And a lot of those people end up as patrons at others businesses in Tunkhannock, including Seasons Restaurant across the street.

“People come in every week, they're laughing, they're smiling, they're having a good time,” said Thor Foss, the owner of Seasons. “It's the only theater in Wyoming County that does all A-run movies, we couldn't live without them.”

Foss credits the theater for revitalizing Tioga Street.

“Fifteen years ago you could watch the tumbleweeds blow up and down this street,” said Foss.

“I reside in Kingston so it's a little drive to come here but it's such a nice theater to bring a child to,” said Maureen Lacey.

The Dietrich Film Festival in Tunkhannock runs through April 21.
