BERWICK -- It was business as usual along Front Street in Berwick but it was a little quieter without one of Berwick's most well-known residents making his daily walk.

"You'd be coming up the street and he'd be coming down and he'd shake your hand," said Paul Bressler.  "Even the people that he didn't know he would shake their hands."

We're talking about football coach George Curry who died at the age of 71.  Even if you live in Berwick but did not play football, you knew who Curry was.

"He's an icon," said Nespoli Jewelers owner Jonathon Nespoli.  "Everyone here knows him and if you don't know of him you know him personally.  He's the type of guy that if you see him, he's going to say hi to you, you're going to say hi to him."

According to residents, Curry ate, slept, and breathed Berwick.

"He loved this community as much as anyone and it showed in the way that he carried on in his life," Nespoli added.

It's not just people from Berwick who knew the coach.  People from all over the country know the name George Curry.

John Hobbis found that out last year when he went to Texas on business.

"They asked where we were from and we said Berwick, Pennsylvania and he immediately said, 'oh, Coach Curry!'  So they recognized immediately that connection to our town," said Hobbis.

Jonathon Nespoli summed it all up in about ten seconds.

"Coach is best known for football side of this community.  He's very well known for football within this community.  But he is much more than a football coach."
