WILKES-BARRE -- After 38 years of delivering mail for the United State Postal Service, George George is trading in his mailman uniform for a fisherman's hat and vest. He's retiring and wore an outfit to symbolize what he'll be doing next.
"All my customers know I like to fish, so I thought it'd be appropriate since I 'm kinda retired to have this motif today," he said.
Only a man with a name like George George can dress up like this for his final day. Or don a leprechaun costume on St. Paddy's Day. Or a Santa suit for Christmas.
"My people expect me to dress up and I bring a lot of smile to their face and in return they're very very nice to me," he said.
Circles on Public Square dedicated part of its sandwich menu to George's final day, including one called, 'My, what a big pension you have!'
Owner Phil Rudy said, "George has been around for a long long time, he's a capital fellow. I don't know if you know George or know his habits or know how he dresses up for holidays, he bends over backwards."
No matter what outfit George may have on, people recognize him because of the affectionate laugh he brings to work every day.
"He always had a smile on his face and he knew everybody. I'd be walking down the street and he'd knew my name. I'd be passing by and he knew the next person's name," said John Maday of Wilkes-Barre.
George has this advice for whoever walks his route next.
"Please have some personality, please smile, and my goodness, be on time, please be on time, my goodness, please be on time!" he said.
Now he'll be spending more time of his time with family.
