BERWICK -- Outside of Crispin Field in Berwick, a make-shift memorial is growing for Coach George Curry.

Curry passed away Friday morning. He was 71-years old.

As the high school football coach with the most wins in state history, he leaves behind a legacy and a void in Berwick.

"He was this town. So many kids went to college because of him, some of these kids would never have had the chance to go to the schools they did go to or they're going to now. My son being one of them,” said Denise Gingher of Berwick tearfully.

Pompoms, pictures, a helmet, flowers and more have been left outside Crispin Field.

“I'm gonna go pick up my son from Indiana, he played for coach and he wants to come home because he heard about everything. Coach was more than coach, he was his friend, he was an inspirer, he taught him a lot and my son always said he wouldn't be the person he is today without coach,” said Vickie Grasley of Berwick.

Curry coached football for nearly half a century and yet many say he touched their lives in other ways.

He taught Maranda Grasley how to drive. “A good man, he did a lot for a lot of people,” she said, before dissolving into tears.

Regina Salem waited on Coach Curry each day for years, serving him oatmeal at 6 a.m. at The White Horse, a restaurant in Berwick.

She never missed a Berwick football game either, home or away.

“He worried about everybody, he loved, he just loved people,” she said, standing outside Crispin Field.

Those who knew him best say George Curry loved football, his family, and his faith.

His legacy will live on.

“He’s meant a lot to this program, he’s been fighting for a whole long time, I feel better that he’s gone. He’s at peace now. I know my father was in his program and coached with him and he played for him, he was a very strong and emotional man and I respect him with my heart,” said Blane Cleaver, a Berwick Area football player.

"Everybody knew it was gonna come sooner or later, I think he got us good, though, got us on April Fools' Day. He was a jokester but he was also serious. He put Berwick on the map,” said Mark Spaid of Berwick.
