SCRANTON -- There was a commemoration in Scranton Monday evening for Irish independence.
The Irish Cultural Society celebrated the Easter Rising which is also known as the Easter Rebellion.
One hundred years ago on Easter Monday, several organizations in Ireland came together to end British rule.
Britain suppressed the uprising, but the skirmishes garnered support for Irish independence.
Monday's ceremony was supposed to be held on Courthouse Square, but strong winds moved the event inside the Lackawanna County Courthouse.
