HARVEYS LAKE -- A car crashed into the Harveys Lake police station Thursday morning.

The car went about half way into the building.

"The inside is a disaster because of this accident, and we're going to have to vacate the building," said Harveys Lake Police Chief Charles Musial.

Harveys Lake police are usually dispatched to crashes. This time, the crash came to them.

"It's not a good day for the police department!" said the chief.

Police believe a car was traveling north on Route 415 when it swerved in an attempt to miss a red SUV that was pulling out of the police station parking lot. But the vehicles crashed and the silver car ended up smashing into the entrance of the police department.

"Somebody avoiding an accident that caused an accident, that's what I got out of it," said Bob Mital of Harveys Lake.

No one was inside the police department at the time of the crash. There were no major injuries, either, but a woman and two children in the red SUV were sent to a nearby hospital to be looked at.

"It was kind of shocking, don't see something like that happen all the time," said sewer authority secretary Denis Sult.

Police are thankful that crash didn't happen at their new department building right next door.

"Fortunately it was the old building that was struck. We're slowly moving into the new station and it looks like we'll have to be a little quicker than expected," said Chief Musial.

Harveys Lake has insurance on the old police building. The decision now is whether to repair it and use it as a place for storage or just knock it down.
