LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP -- Failing water lines near Williamsport are getting an upgrade.

The Williamsport Municipal Water Authority started work Monday on a project in Loyalsock Township.

There was a line of traffic out on Four Mile Drive in Loyalsock Township just outside Williamsport.

"As long as they're replacing, doing their job, it's not a problem with me," said township resident Lonell Lee.

Neighbors watched as workers pulled out their mailboxes and dug up their front yards.

The Williamsport Municipal Water Authority is making improvements to its water lines, replacing a 50-year-old, 8-inch pipe with new 12-inch ductile iron piping.

"We had a failure on it last January which, during freezing weather, caused icing over of the road, so this main is instrumental to providing good reliable service to our customers," said Chuck Hauser, Williamsport Municipal Water Authority.

Knowing this new pipeline will have double the life expectancy of the one already in place is good news for neighbors who have had disruption in service in the past because of a water main break.

"The neighbor had trouble, we had trouble out front here, it was like a fountain going up out of our yard," said Sandy Hahn.

Hahn and her husband live along Four Mile Drive. A water line break on her neighbor's property five or six years ago caused a headache for the couple.

"Their water broke and went all through their house and flooded their basement."

The Williamsport Municipal Water Authority tells Newswatch 16 there will be one lane of traffic on the road for about three months while they replace about a mile of piping.

As for homeowners, there may be a minor disruption in service when the water authority switches to the new line sometime later this spring.
