DUBLIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Three people are dead after an armed robbery Sunday morning along the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Fulton County. The suspect has been identified by state police as a retired Pennsylvania state trooper.

A turnpike employee and a contractor were shot and killed at the Fort Littleton interchange, about 67 miles west of Harrisburg, shortly before 7 a.m., according to state police.

According to investigators, Clarence D. Briggs, 55, of Newville pointed a gun at two employees in the toll booth area. He forced them into the office building and attempted to tie them up. The employees fought back and Briggs ran out of the building. The two employees followed him out and at that time a fare collection vehicle pulled up.

Troopers said turnpike employee Daniel Crouse and Ronald Heist, a security guard of the fare collection vehicle, were shot and killed by Briggs. Briggs then started shooting at the collection vehicle. The driver was able to run off.

Briggs then allegedly took the collection vehicle, driving it across Route 522 to the area where his car was parked. He started to move money from the collection vehicle to his car,  according to state police.

Investigators said troopers showed up minutes later and Briggs and a trooper started shooting at each other. Briggs was shot and killed.

According to state police, Briggs is a retired Pennsylvania state trooper. He retired from Troop T in Newville in January 2012.

Troopers said the entire incident is still under investigation.
