LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP -- Big Brothers Big Sisters in Lycoming County had to close its chapter in Williamsport because of a lack of funding.

But the nonprofit organization that pairs adult mentors with children and teens is back.

On a weeknight when Faxon Lanes near Williamsport was packed with bowling teams, Denise Gorini and 11-year-old Hanna Murphy tried their hand at a game just for fun.

The two are just getting to know each other. They were recently matched as big and little.

"I'm the oldest so I have no one to bond with," said Hanna.

"Well, hopefully we can develop a good relationship and I can help her through school, and she likes sports and she likes animals. Those are things that I like also," Denise said.

This weekend, the nonprofit Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bridge, funded by Catholic Social Services, hopes to fill the bowling alley.

"We also get funds from donors, from the community, and events just like Bowl for Kids' Sake," explained Kyle Manikowski of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Big Brothers Big Sisters pairs up adult mentors with children or teenagers who are in need of positive role models.

Bowl for Kids' Sake is the program's first big fundraiser since it reopened back in November.

"The last program actually folded due to funds and now there is funding for the program and it's here to stay," Manikowski said.

The way Big Brothers Big Sisters sees it, the more bowlers they have sign up, the more chances they have to make matches in Lycoming County.

"I know the same day we are having our event, Columbia County is doing theirs Wilkes-Barre is doing theirs," Manikowski added.

"Hopefully, a lot of people come out and support Big Brothers Big Sisters," Gorini said.

The fundraiser begins at noon on Saturday at Faxon Lanes in Lycoming County.
